meaningful relationships with others, develop a positive self-image, participate
in the democratic process, and respect their own and others' cultural identities.
*The Education and Career Development Core Program
enables youth to become proficient in basic educational disciplines, apply
learning to everyday situations, and embrace technology to optimize
employability.
*The Health and Life Skills Core Program develops young
people's capacity to engage in positive behaviors that nurture their own

Interns worked closely with Club Directors and staff to implement and
improve sports, fitness and recreation programs and strategies.
*This internship offered opportunities to create and promote
programming through marketing and public relations opportunities, hands on activities and other various tasks. As a intern I developed great sports oriented skills and a strong desire to help youth.
* (10) or more hours per week were required for this position.
*While interning for the Boys & Girls of the Metropolitan South Phoenix division I had the opportunity to work with young kids and actually be the assistance coach. Practices Monday and Wednesday were ran by me. My teams name was Desert Force, we had a total of 10 game season throughout the season we struggled until the play-offs. As a team I could honestly say they matured together and ultimately won the championship. Through extensive coaching I made the young men believe in their abilities, it was not at all easy working 12-13 year old kids. But that experience tested my patience at times, but ultimately taught me a lesson coaching is not a job its a skill.

Journal June/11/2012
Desert Force's first practice was held Monday June 11, 2012 at 4:30 every practice lasted about an hour and half so another team could use the court. Since this was our first practice I used this practice to get to know each one of my player's. These kids were from different parts of the city. Only a couple of the kids went to the same school, and previously knew each other. So my main goal was to make these young men interact with each other. Wednesday I had a specific practice for us that will help me find out which player's were fundamentally sound and which of the players I would focus my time on. After getting to know a little about all my players and what school they go to, I also wanted to know what their desired position on the court would be. Wednesday the June/13/2012 we held our second practice which I designated to having drills, conditioning, and talking to parents about after each game a parent will have to provide snacks after the game. Our first game was about 2 weeks away it gave us time as a team to collab with each other get some plays set within our offense also get our defense tougher. Our first game was Saturday 23,2012 at 10a.m. we played 2 twenty minutes quarters and depending on how the bracket was we could possibly play 2 games. This Saturday was not our best playing together as a team the kids were not playing as a team. Also we had to many selfish players on the team, everybody can not be Kobe or Lebron that was the talk I had with the players after the game. I also told the young men to bring their running shoes on Monday because we looked out of shape, missed to many freethrows in clutch. I also preched to them all these things could be fixed. (10hrs)

June/25/2012
As Monday rolled around our practice schedule was very gruesome, first practice would start by warm-up streching then lead into lay-up lines. After that for about 20-30 minutes I would make these young men practice their plays because if you can not run the plays you can not play. I also went over our last game and were exactly went wrong. We lost by 8 points and we missed 15 free throws that sums it up. Also I informed them that ball hogging will not be tolerated so work with your team basketball is a team sports. Being so young and for alot of my players this was the first time they played basketball so fundamentals were being taught for the 6 weeks. Wednesday's practice was very intense I separated the team into 2 teams to see which of my players worked hard and played hard on the court. Saturday June 30,2012 we had our second game this game by far was better then last weeks, it was tough the whole game but we failed and came up short at the end. I never dealt with young kids crying but that just tells me that they played hard and their competitive spirit is alive. I informed them even though we came up short, I respected how they played becuase they played hard. Fast forward to Saturday July 7,2012 we had a 5p.m. game which meant we were last on the scheduled games for the day, I was nervous because I was one of the coaches in the league that has not won, I told myself not to change the method. Every kid would play because at the end of the day they paid equal amount to be in this league. Other coaches were just playing their best kids to win, I wanted every young man to recive the same benefits there would be absolutely no favoritism. This Saturday was our first victory, These young men were exceptionally excited, I felt like a kid again because I was just as happy as them. (10hrs)
July/9/2012
On Monday July/9/2012 our first practice after our win felt very good, I stressed to these young men if you guys like this feeling you guys have you have to work harder to maintain this feeling. It starts here at practice, this practice was very intense these kids wanted to get better and they sure were making improvements every week. Fast forward to our game on July 14,2012 we played exceptionally well but could not pull it of this week. July 21,2012 we played a team that also was from South Phoenix so the game was packed many of the players were playing kids from their elementary school or possibly their friend this was a bragging right game. I told my players to keep their composure through it all. the game went back and fourth but at the ned of the game we were victorius. (10hrs)
July/23/2013
After the victory against our other South phoenix team these young men had the confidence to run for president, because players that never played the game of basketball organized were stating to develop the swagger like they have ben doing this for years. Confidence of a win brings out the great in players. Our regular season was coming to end we had 2 more games of regular season then playoffs would begin, I stressed the importance of the rest of our games to my team Desert Force. Saturday July 28,2012 we had 2 games this day our first game was at 11a.m. against the team that beat us the first game of the season my team wanted revenge and so did I. my team was way more equiped with confidence and swagger on the court know, from tip off we ran the other team up and down the court we eventually won the margin was greater then what they beat us. that comes to show you the improvement we made from the first game. Our second game was at 2p.m. we never saw this team before so there was not to much of a scouting report against them. I coached my team to play hard and that is exactly what they did from the get go. We won 2 games this Saturday I couldnt be more proud of these young men because they were running the plays that were taught to them and executing them to perfection. (10hrs)

Our season was coming to end we had one more regular season game left on calender then tournament play would begin, I emphasized the struggle it will be to win but the feeling at the end will be worth it. When I first started coaching these kids I realized it would be a long journey to have them understand the principle of basketball and the organized concept but these young men wanted to win and worked hard at it. At practice this Monday we went through our regular drills and warm ups also our plays. After a couple hours of practice I was satisfied, Wednesday consisted of the same practice just more lighter the Mondays. I put them through competitive drills against each other to see who was ready for Saturday. Saturday rolled around my team was their an hour early just to watch the team ahead of us, I told them to come early to show them the art of studying your opponent. this Saturday was a breeze we won our game with a large margin in between us and the other team I think my team was ready for any team know they mastered the skill of teamwork I was very proud of them. August/4/2012
This Saturday was our first weekend of the playoffs, after a week of tiring practice that went longer then usual our first team we played was the team we studied an hour before our game last week. My players had a look on their face that I couldn't explain they were ready for this game. This game went back and fourth it had about 10 lead changes I think I was nervous more then my players because they kept playing while i was sweating bullets on the side line. half time we were down by 2, one of the young men I called him our silent leader because he never said much but was always at practice first and the last one to leave shouted we are better then this team. It took a lot of courage for him to talk, I respected that kid for that i told my team at half time relax run the plays get good shots and always play hard it was our motto by know. After half time these kids went on a run that just had the whole gym at amazment we took the lead in the 4th quarter and never looked back. Our second game was at 3p.m. so the parents and I took the kids to Subway for a quick lunch before returning to the gym, our next opponent was of cours the other South Phoenix team. The coach and I talked before the game they wanted revenge, I told my team that its like they were not effected these young men went out there on the court and demolished the other South Phoenix team it was delightful site to see. I told my players to get some rest becuae Monday and wednesday was going to be our last week of practice. (12hrs)
(Championship Weekend)
At practice on Monday I was kind of upset a couple of my players were missing to go school shopping, I did not understand why they did not prioritize and do that earlier in the day. I was not upset because they did not show up I was mad at the fact they were letting there teammates down. So I called up the missing players and the whole team and scheduled a private practice for the next day. I ultimately told them they had to sit out for the first half of the game next week and stressed the fact the fact they let their teammates down and this team. Saturday came around the bracket was set up if we win we would be the champoionship game. But we would have to win twice based on how we did during the regular season. our first game was against a team we lost to in the regular season but what they did mot know was how much we have grown as a team since the second week of this league. The game was tight until the 4th quarter the young men that missed practice made up for their absense by playing harder then usual they came to play we won that game. Our next game was at 1p.m. we absolutely demolished this team I was astounded by how my team came to play, in the beginning of the season we were the laughing stalk of the league but know we were top contenders. We had break until the championship game at 6p.m. so I discussed with the parent to have them back by 5p.m. I stayed and did my job duties as a coach and watched each team play. We would face the JR. Suns this team was sponsored by Chanon Frye of the Phoenix Suns, it was going to be a tough task but I felt how my team was playing cohesively we could beat anyone. As the tip off began we were down the whole game. At halftime we were down my players heads were down, I told them pick their heads up there is still alot of basketball to be played, we were only down 10 and been in this position before. As the second half began we came out on fire we tied it up if I can recall, then after that the confidence and momentum was on our side, we never looked back we won the champioship I was so happy for these young men they achieved something incredible they grew from kids to young men in a matter of months. being my first time coaching I was also intriuged at the fact I did this, this will eventually be my career one day I felt if I could master the part in coaching children I could coach on any level. (10hrs)
banquet and Award Ceremony
The award ceremony was something else, these parents put it together because The Boys & Girls Club does not fund it. I had to pick 3 kids I felt made the most improvemnt and also I had to pick a defense specilist and a MVP for the award I was nervous and did not like the fact on picking specific indivuals for awards at so young of an age. Because to be honest all these young men worked hard evey weeks for monhs improved their skills for the next level. I definetly will be coaching again this summer.
